Nursing & The
Divine Mercy in Action
As
nurses, by performing our duties for our patients out of love
for Jesus and for them, we become His very merciful presence,
ministering His healing spiritually as well as caring for their
physical needs. Nurturing a spirit of trust, prayer and mercy
towards our patients and their families allows the Divine Physician
to work through us, inspiring those who are suffering to trust
in His mercy. This is the essence of the attitude of the Spirit
of Mercy that God needs from us for His healing work. We carry
Jesus, always present with us in our hearts, taking the tenderness
and compassion of Jesus right to the souls of our patients.
"Be
always merciful as I am merciful. Love everyone out of love for
Me, even your greatest enemies, so that My mercy may be fully
reflected in your heart." (1695) Diary
By
commending their nursing duties to Jesus, The Divine Mercy and
uniting their
actions to the passion of Jesus, the nurses’ hands,
when touching their patients, become Jesus’ hands and
heal not only with their hands but through their hearts,
turning their
everyday patient care into deeds of mercy. By the nurse’s
actions, both interior and exterior, they are fulfilling
in their lives as nurses what Jesus asked of St.Faustina
in The Divine Mercy devotion.
St.
Faustina tells us of helping a patient (when she was in the hospital
for treatment of
tuberculosis and extremely
ill
herself):
"The doctor did not allow me to go to the chapel to attend the Passion
Service, although I had a great desire for it; however,
I prayed in my own room. Suddenly I heard the bell in the next room, and
I went in and rendered a service to a seriously sick person.
When I returned to my room, I suddenly saw the Lord Jesus, who said, "My
daughter, you gave Me greater pleasure by rendering Me
that service than if you had prayed for a long time." I
answered, "But
it was not to You, Jesus, but to that patient that I
rendered this service." And the Lord answered me, "Yes,
My daughter, but whatever you do for your neighbor, you
do for Me." (1029)
