How often I read the first great commandment as spoken by Jesus--"You shall love the Lord your God with your whole heart, your whole soul, your whole mind and with all your strength." As I reflected on it one day, I realized that what is being asked of us is to love God with all of our affections (whole heart), with our very life (our whole soul), with all of our intellect (our whole mind) and with all of our will (our whole strength). We so often think of love as an emotion and fail to realize that love is a living and active relationship with someone, that we do love with our intellect (we recognize qualities in the other that make him/her loveable, and that love is an act of the will, a decision made, not just a reaction to someone. Loving really engages the whole person and so our love for God (and neighbor) should engage our whole person as well.
