We're sharing the first week of the Marian Fathers' new Lenten booklet, Footsteps to Mercy. - UPDATE: This book has sold out! Please sign up for our monthly eNewsletter so you can find out when we have more books like this.
"[T]his is the fasting that I wish..."
Release those bound unjustly, untie the thongs of the yoke; Set free the oppressed, breaking every yoke; Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless; Clothe the naked when you see them, and do not turn your back on your own - this is the fasting that the Lord wishes, as He states in the first reading today in Isaiah.
Lent is not just a time to give up something (like food, or social media, or television). Lent is a yearly reminder from the Lord to go out and serve others. Our Holy Father Pope Francis has been telling us this same message since the very start of his pontificate. During the Way of the Cross in 2016, he said, "The Lord once more asks you to be in the forefront of serving others. He wants to make of you a concrete response to the needs and sufferings of humanity. He wants you to be signs of His merciful love for our time! To enable you to carry out this mission, He shows you the way of personal commitment and self-sacrifice. It is the Way of the Cross."
Take time today to examine yourself and ask the Lord, "How are You calling me to serve others and be a sign of Your merciful love?"
Today's Readings:
Scripture:
Is 58:1-9A;
Ps 51:3-4,
5-6AB, 18-19;
Mt 9:14-15
Read Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska, 742
