In the course of history, the National Shrine has been the destination of thousands of pilgrims, even from around the world. They have found it to be a place of rest and renewal in a setting of natural beauty. They experienced peace and spiritual uplifting in the beautifully appointed sanctuary.
This outdoor shrine, nestled in a wooded hillside below the National Shrine, was built in 1997 to serve the pilgrims who would like to light votive candles for their prayer petitions. It contains three candle rooms, housing more than 1,600 candles.
This shrine is one of the largest indoor candle shrines in the United States with more than 2,600 candles burning brightly for the prayer intentions of members of the Association of Marian Helpers, members of the Circle of Light program, and all others requesting candles to be lit for their intentions.
