So What Was the Miracle, Anyway?

Last week, the Vatican announced the approval of a miracle attributed to the intercession of Blessed Stanislaus of Jesus and Mary Papczyński (1631-1701), the Founder of the Congregation of Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary. The approval opens the way for his canonization.

Now, today (Jan. 27), we celebrate the feast day of another famous Marian Father — the man responsible for establishing the Marians' presence here in the United States in 1913. That was Blessed George Matulaitis, known as the Marians' Renovator.

We receive a lot of inquiries regarding the miracle through Blessed George that led to his beatification on June 28, 1987. We hereby share the details — and in doing so, we encourage you to seek Blessed George's intercession.

First of all, one interesting point is that Blessed George suffered great pain and had difficulty walking because of tuberculosis of the bone. The beatification miracle involved a woman who had difficulty walking.

Some brief facts: Adelaide Tamosiunaite was born in 1889 and lived in Panevezys, Lithuania. She was a teacher who rode a bicycle to school each day, but she had to stop after the pain of varicose veins in her left leg became unbearable. Soon, her condition, which had affected her for 30 years, made it too painful for her to walk.

In 1974, at the age of 85, she became bed-ridden due to thrombophlebitis. Her condition was considered hopeless. She faithfully turned to the Servant of God George Matulaitis in a novena.

One morning during the novena, she woke and realized that the varicose manifestations of the thrombophlebitis had disappeared. She immediately ran to tell her family without feeling any discomfort.

Until her death in 1979, Adelaide had no other ailment of her left leg and foot.

In a letter to the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints written on May 6, 1985, His Excellency Liudas Povilonis, titular archbishop of Arcavica, apostolic administrator of Kaunas and Vilkaviskis, and president of the Lithuanian Episcopal Conference, wrote that "the reputation for holiness and of miracles of the Venerable Servant of God George Matulaitis-Matulewicz is spread far and wide in Lithuania and in the neighboring areas. The faithful frequently visit his tomb and not infrequently, they obtain both spiritual and corporal graces through the intercession of the Venerable Servant of God."

The Marians invite you to pray the following prayer for a special grace through the intercession of Blessed George:

O God, our Lord and Father, You surround us always by Your care; receive our humble petition, and through the intercession of Blessed George, who suffered so much for Your glory and for the increase of Your Kingdom here on earth, grant me the grace for which I ask You with confidence, promising to live from now on with greater fidelity to Your commandments. Amen.
Our Father ... Hail Mary ... Glory be to the Father ...

The Marians also request that you pray the following prayer for the canonization of Blessed George:

O most holy and indivisible Trinity, You make your abode in the hearts of those who serve You faithfully on earth, and after death crown their merits with a reward in heaven. Grant, we humbly pray, that Your Servant Blessed George, who with the help of the Immaculate Virgin Mary served Your Church with apostolic zeal, through her intercession be crowned soon with the glory of sainthood. through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Our Father ... Hail Mary ... Glory be ...
