Lent 2010: In Your Mercy, Preserve My Life

The following is the fifth in a series of Lenten reflections, written as a dialogue between the Lord and the soul. These reflections are inspired by the Diary of St. Faustina and Scripture.

"Little one, are you still with Me?"

Yes, Lord, I'm still here. I was just waiting for You to heap more suffering on me, especially because You asked me to walk with You on this Lenten journey. But I have to say, I'm not really fond of suffering. Alright - I admit it - I'm afraid to suffer!

"My child, thank you for speaking so frankly to Me. Many people fear suffering, and ultimately Me. They think that it's the amount of suffering that will appease Me, but in truth, what pleases Me most is the love and trust with which they bear their sufferings."

Lord, I know that I can't escape suffering, but it seems that my suffering is already enormous."

"Little heart, I am gentle with you and will never give you a burden that is heavier than you can carry."

Well, Lord. If that's so true, how come I feel overwhelmed by the suffering in my life?

"My child, unite your suffering to Mine; do not let a moment of it be wasted. Turn to Me, even when you feel like you are about to be swept away in a tidal wave of suffering. Cling to Me, for I will not let you drown. I understand your suffering. Was it not said of Me that there is no suffering like My suffering? Keep your eyes on Me, My friend, as we walk together. Why do you hesitate? My child, will you ever find an agony as great as Mine? Here, take My hand. Do not worry, little one, just walk with Me and love Me. That is all I ask of you. Offer to Me everything - including all your suffering."

I shall particularly defend each one of them at the hour of death."
