Pray for the USA!

Did you know that Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patroness of America? Not just one part - not just North or South America, but the whole continent of the New World.

She is also the Star of the New Evangelization, Patroness of the Unborn, and the Queen of All Hearts.

Of course, all those titles are merely icing on the cake. She is Mary, the Mother of God, first and most importantly. At root, all her titles are merely adornments of the one Immaculate Conception, totally pure throughout her life and Queen of Heaven after her death.

But those titles do play a role, helping us appeal to the Blessed Virgin Mary at particular times for particular needs, especially as they emerge in particular places.

So when America is in special need, we turn to our patroness under the titles of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Immaculate Conception. Every year in this country, some of the largest annual gatherings of Catholics center around the Blessed Virgin Mary as tens of thousands flock to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe on her feast day, Dec. 12, at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Des Plaines, Illinois. Every year, Catholics and others gather at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., in order to attend the March for Life on Jan. 22, the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion in this country.

Every year, we honor her. And every year, she showers graces and blessings through her intercession upon all her faithful children in the United States and around the world.

On the first Thursday in May, the United States of America observes a National Day of Prayer, proclaimed by the President and celebrated by the people of the country. Let us take the opportunity on May 7, this year's National Day of Prayer, to pray, fast, and intercede for our country, using the great promises attached to the Divine Mercy message and devotions to their utmost for our country and the whole world. Let us turn with faith to Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Immaculate Conception, asking for her powerful intercession on our behalf, on behalf of the entire country, and of all of America, that through the grace of God, the New World becomes home to a culture of life birthing a civilization of love, and thereby blessing all the world.
