Marians Mourn One of Their Own

Father John (Jonas) Duoba, MIC, former General Secretary for the Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception and a member of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Mercy Province, died on Jan. 2, at Matulaitis Nursing Home in Putnam, Conn.

The funeral took place on Wednesday, Jan. 8, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10:30 a.m. at the National Shrine of The Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, Mass. The Very Rev. Fr. Kazimierz Chwalek, MIC, provincial superior, was the main celebrant.

Called to Service

"Now we have to change your name - we can't call you Br. Chris anymore!" said Chris Alar's superior the Very Rev. Kazimierz Chwalek, MIC, at the end of the Ordination Mass.

Surrounded by friends, Marian priests and brothers, and well-wishers, Chris Alar was ordained a deacon Saturday, Sept. 21, on the feast of St. Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist. So many people intended to attend, in fact, that a separate Mass was held for the four busloads of people who couldn't fit into the National Shrine itself.

Coming to America

As we enter into August, we should take time to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Marian Congregation in the United States on Aug. 18, 1913. To mark this moment, here is a little more of the history of Blessed George Matulaitis’s trip to the United States and the foundation of the first Marian house in America.

'Here I Am, Lord'

Referred to lovingly by his legion of admirers as the "Energizer Bunny" of the Marians - a dynamo with a heart on fire for Christ and His Church - Br. Chris Alar, MIC, professed his perpetual vows as a Marian on Aug. 16, in a liturgy celebrated at the National Shrine of The Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, Mass.

God willing, he will be ordained a deacon on Sept. 21, and his superiors are planning for a priestly ordination in 2014.
