Deacon James' Answer to God's Call

On Aug. 15, 2007, I witnessed the first vows of two special brothers: Br. Angelo Casimiro, MIC, and (now) Deacon James Cervantes, MIC. My time in the Marians has been marked by a particular love for these two older brothers who are just one step ahead of me in religious life. The day after I became a novice, they became brothers. On Nov. 17, 2010, Br. James Cervantes became Deacon James Cervantes, the first Marian seminarian to be ordained in the Philippines.

His 'Great Gift from God'

I woke up much earlier than usual - 3:50 a.m. to be exact - on Wednesday, Nov. 17. I wanted to go back to sleep, but I was too excited. I had a sense I was going to receive a great gift from God. I felt somewhat like a little child on Christmas morning. I knew I was going to be a deacon ordained to the ministry of service so I began reflecting on the word "servant." I noticed how closely it resembled my last name - Cervantes. Hmmm, I thought curiously to myself.

Meet 'Fr. Andy of the Jungle'

Peace be with you in abundance from the Lord Jesus Christ!

I want to share with you some of my experiences during the first month of a three-month stay in the Marians' Philippines mission in the Philippines. For those who don't know me, I am a newly ordained Marian priest (I was ordained in May) currently assigned to our Marian parishes in Plano and Yorkville, Ill. But for the months of August, September, and October, this mild-mannered parish priest is mysteriously transformed into "Fr. Andy of the Jungle."
