At the Foot of the Cross

The following letter was forwarded to us from the Disciples of Divine Mercy in the Holy Face of Jesus, based in Buffalo, N.Y. This testimony - a "thank you" letter to the Disciples - shows how God is doing many good things through this ministry.

I just want to thank you all for bringing me and my husband and daughter and the painful situation into the presence of Jesus. God has heard your prayers and shown His great mercy towards me. During this last week, where I remained in complete silence together with your prayer support, God moved, and the Holy Spirit [moved in my husband] and revealed itself to me, too. Beside that, the power of God intervened, and as we prayed, the Holy Spirit showed my husband the ugly side of himself and brought him to his knees in deep repentance before God. The most amazing miracle was when he suddenly started calling me the last four days and pleading for forgiveness, acknowledging his selfishness and evil ways.

I couldn't believe a man so proud and arrogant like him was almost crying and begging me to come with him to church, saying he wants to go before the Holy Cross and ask forgiveness from God for the evil things he did to me and to be given the grace to treat me better.

To be honest, it was hard for me to talk to him, and I found it hard to forgive him, and I told him so. But my 10-year-old daughter challenged me, saying, "Ma, God will be very angry with you if you don't forgive Dad, because you prayed he will repent, now God has answered your prayer, but you refuse to do what God wants. Ma, don't preach your Holy Gospels to me,if you can't forgive Dad, because you are not a good example to me if you can't forgive him, so how can I learn to forgive?"

So there you are ... I had no chance with my 10-year-old daughter. God spoke to me, too, through her, and so I took strength and courage and the three of us went on Sunday morning to [a Catholic shrine] about 100 kilometers away from where we live.

My husband embraced my daughter and me at the foot of the Cross and begged forgiveness from God and me. I have never seen him like this. Praise the Lord.

While I thank you all, and beg the Lord to protect you all, I ask you to continue to pray that our family will serve the Lord, and that my husband will be given the grace to be delivered from his hot temper and desire for alcohol. I know your powerful prayer support brought him to his knees in repentance. In the same way, please help me with your prayers to set him free from drinking and a hot temper.

Thank you so much. I will be grateful to you all my life.

The world may think that Christmas ended at midnight on Christmas Day, but the Church knows better. We celebrate an eight-day Christmas Octave, stretching from Dec. 25 to Jan. 1, with a number of special feast days, including three feasts of martyrs:

On Oct. 28, the Church celebrates the Feast Day of Sts. Simon and Jude, apostles of the Lord who zealously preached to the nations. Father Dan Cambra, MIC, tells their story.
