To Be Followers of Christ

He who knows how to forgive prepares for himself many graces from God. As often as I look upon the cross, so often will I forgive with all my heart.
- Diary of St. Faustina, 390

God forgives, but His forgiveness comes at a price. The price is our forgiveness of others. Jesus tells us," If you forgive others their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you" (Mt 6:14). To gaze upon the cross is to put these things into perspective. Indeed, in the very midst of torture, Christ forgives His torturers. Is there any single act in the history of mankind that better illustrates the power and dignity of forgiveness? Think about it. Perfectly holy, Love Itself, Jesus beseeches His Father to forgive those who crucify Him.

As difficult as it may be, we must forgive if we are to be followers of Christ.

Lord, help me to be more like You and forgive those who have hurt me. I want Your forgiveness, Lord, and know that I can only receive it by offering forgiveness to others. Amen.
