'Where Good Meets Evil'

by Joellyn Soler

I spent a recent day at Planned Parenthood with Mark, Judi, Michael, Br. Max, Jeanine, and Br. Conrad.

I wore a blue T-shirt that read "ABORTION" across the top. Underneath, it had three visuals in a sequence. The first two squares showed a photo of a pre-born baby. The third simply showed a black space. Under the three panels were the words, GROWING, GROWING, GONE.

If you look quickly, you see "ABORTION" and think I am pro-abortion. Invariably, though, people's visual curiosity causes their eyes to look at the pictures in the squares. When they look at them, they see that the sequence depicts a baby dying.

I had the shirt made to match the blue shirt that Planned Parenthood escorts wear, so that they are easily identifiable to women going to the facility for an abortion. From the reactions of the escorts, I saw my shirt upset them. They heckled and cursed.

"You should think about wearing a shirt like this," I said to the escorts.

"Why would I want to do that?" one of the escorts asked.

"Because it's the truth," I answered.

It is apparent that we pro-lifers were definitely rocking the boat out there that day. One girl yelled, "I hate you people."

You can feel the rage some people have from just seeing us standing out there, not even talking to anyone. They react that way because we rock people's consciences, and we know that's why Planned Parenthood wants to move to another location. That's how we know that what we do is effective.

For those who are new to the front lines, it can be shocking. The verbal abuse we take from passing motorists and pedestrians is vitriolic, but it's okay. We've heard most of it many times before. We rely on prayer and Our Lady to give us strength and offer it up to God.

It can be an ugly atmosphere. One girl actually pulled her jeans down so we could see her rear end after having cursed us. You see it all out there, on the front lines of being pro-life. We see so much anger and hatred that it convinces us that abortion is evil for bringing out the worst in people. We fight it with love.

We walk where good meets evil.

We thank the Marian Father's Thirteenth of the Month Club members for their prayers. With their help, we shall continue to go out, speak the truth, and leave the results to God. Mother Mary, Queen of Peace, pray for us.
