A Resolution to Remember

Every year, the prayer intentions seem to pile up around the holidays. I don't know why. Deaths, diseases, disaster - it's as if the devil is trying his hardest to spoil the season of joy. And all across the news, bad things keep happening. So perhaps it's time to turn over a new leaf, to make a New Year's resolution that will matter into eternity:

Whenever you watch the news in the new year, have your rosary in your hand.

It's that simple. And that powerful.

Two of the greatest prayers we have as Catholic Christians, outside of the Mass, are the Rosary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Both are prayed on an ordinary set of rosary beads. Both are relatively short. Both are exceptionally blessed by God and His mother.

As you're watching the latest crisis, crazy celebrity scandal, or disgusting or bizarre news story, don't grumble about it. Don't let it get stuck in your head, eating away at your faith, hope, and love for the rest of the day. Instead, pray for the people involved.

When the media talk about truly despicable people, don't join in the Two Minutes Hate against these enemies of all of us. Remember the great wisdom of Jesus and pray for them. Pray for your enemies. Pray for those who persecute you. Pray for those who disgust and disturb you. Pray for those people who you find hard to love.

The Chaplet only takes about five minutes, or one commercial break. The Rosary only takes about 20 minutes. You're watching the news anyway, and probably going to be dragged down by what's being shared. Don't be helpless in the face of the evil and suffering in the world. Use your God-given tools, your weapons in the dire combat of the spiritual life, to help save your own soul and rescue the souls of your brothers and sisters.

Pray, children of God! Pray!
