The Marian Fathers present this Lenten devotional series to help you prepare to receive graces on Easter and Divine Mercy Sunday.
Readings: 2 Sam 7:4-5A, 12-14A, 16; Ps 89:2-3, 4-5, 27 and 29; Rom 4:13, 16-18, 22; Mt 1:16, 18-21, 24A or Lk 2:41-51A
Diary: 608, 846
When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home. - Mt 1:24
A popular meme on social media says, "Be the kind of person who, when you floor it the floor in the morning, the Devil says, 'Oh no, they're up!'"
Today is the feast day of someone who fits that description. It's the Solemnity of St. Joseph, husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Solemnities are the highest degree of feast for the most important mysteries of the faith. They include Easter, Pentecost, and the Immaculate Conception, among others that honor some saints of particular importance in salvation history.
What is St. Joseph's role in salvation history? A descendant of David, Joseph takes Mary and Jesus as his legal family, thus fulfi lling this Messianic prophecy. He also, of course, provides for and protects Mary and Jesus.
Why would so much honor be given to a man who is not recorded as saying a single word? Who Joseph is and what he does speak louder than any words. Much like Mary, St. Joseph responds immediately to the message of an angel. Here, Joseph has had a dream in which he received a command from the angel of the Lord. He acts in the Lord's service as soon as he awakens.
What a way to start the day!
Prayer: Lord, through the intercession of St. Joseph, I pray for the courage and strength to respond immediately to Your will.
