Turn to any page of St. Faustina’s Diary, and you’ll find spiritual gems, like this one:
My daughter, all your miseries have been consumed in the flame of My love, like a little twig thrown into a roaring fire. By humbling yourself in this way, you draw upon yourself and upon other souls an entire sea of My mercy (Diary, 178).
Which do you think would win in a head-to-head matchup: a roaring fire of God’s love or an entire sea of God’s mercy? Well, it’s a trick question. Neither quenches the other. Both represent attributes of God that are infinite!
In the Diary passage above, Jesus implies that compared to the roaring fire of His love and the sea of His mercy, our misery is nothing but a little twig. But what are our "twigs"? Anything that holds us back from trusting in God: an illness, a broken relationship, a financial burden. God wants us consumed in His love and mercy, not preoccupied by things that, in the grand scheme of life, are small and unimportant.
Sometimes, to us, our twigs can seem like an entire redwood forest. But not to God. That's why this Lent, whatever your twigs might be, bring them to God. Talk to Him about them as you would talk to a dear friend, and He will either burn them away with the fire of His love or wash them away with the ocean of His mercy. Your problems are important to God, but they are nothing compared to His infinite power. So trust in Him!
