Ben Steele spoke first, on “my faith and how I’ve used this Rosary to help strengthen my faith and to help strengthen the faith of others.” He shared how his faith was established by his mother and grandmother who would bring him to Mass as he was growing up. Even though he wasn’t always the most attentive or aware Catholic, Steele said, he learned that “proximity was power,” and being close to our Lord in the Eucharist had a real impact on his heart and soul over the years.
"Rosaries of Steele" was inspired by his high-school athletic director, Jim Selke, who made a Rosary for him with the team colors for each team Steele was on as he was in school, and then would go on to make a Rosary with the team colors of each team Steele went on to play or work for. Steele and his family make and distribute Rosaries designed especially for men.
“When you pray the Rosary,” Steele said, “you really can’t fail.”
Elvis Grbac spoke on the importance of modeling love like God the Father. Just graduated from a master’s in theology program, he was eager to share what he’d studied. Grbac read to the crowd “a Gospel passage you’ve heard 1,000 times,” asking them to concentrate on the father in the story: the parable of the Prodigal Son (Lk 15:11-32).
The father “gives to his sons freely,” observed Grbac, trusting the sons and hoping that his gifts will be used well, just as God the Father gives us existence, free will, and His graces. The father, as any father would, knows his son from a distance from his walk, the way he moves, the way he carries himself, and runs to him “in compassion, and kissed him.”
“The abundance the Father has is constantly with us,” said Grbac, encouraging us to bring God into every decision and welcome His grace and mercy.
“Who feels the love of the Lord?” asked Jim Wahlberg. Author of The Big Hustle, Wahlberg shared his testimony to the mercy of God leading him from a life of alcohol and crime to one of faith, family, and evangelization. Beginning to drink at the age of 12, Wahlberg fell away from his family into the seemingly welcoming streets, eventually going in and out of state prison. His turning point: the pastoral ministry of an exceptional priest named Fr James Fratus, and a visit to the prison by Mother Teresa.
“I’d never seen true humility before,” said Wahlberg, when he observed Mother Teresa declining a special chair next to the cardinal, remaining instead in prayer alongside all the inmates. She spoke of a Jesus who’d died for each and every person present there today, a God who loved and was merciful—and Jim was hooked. He’d never heard that before, he said, and Fr. Fratus made sure he received the formation he needed to come all the way home to the full practice of his Catholic faith.

"On this Divine Mercy Sunday, the Octave Day of Easter, the Lord completely opens the floodgates, and pours out a whole ocean of graces upon those who approach the fount of His mercy, offering complete forgiveness of sins and punishment to those who’ve gone to Confession and received Holy Communion today," Fr. Tomeny said. "We thank God for providing us poor sinners a refuge and shelter from the very depths of His tender and unfathomable mercy."
"Pope Francis is known for his desire to make certain that the effects of Divine Mercy are experienced everywhere, especially on the peripheries," he continued. "Even the motto of his pontificate, Miserando atque eligendo, 'By having mercy, and by choosing him,' emphasizes this imitation of Divine Mercy. He will be ever remembered for his impetus to bring the message of salvation to every person and leave no stone unturned in his quest to invite all to experience the merciful Lord."
Archbishop Broglio concluded with a call to action. "Divine grace, when we draw upon it, allows us to build up the community of harmony and grace," he said. "The mission is to go forward from this celebration with the challenge to build up our human communities to reflect more precisely our origin and call. The incivility, anger, back-biting, and me worship that so often characterize our world need not be the rule. They can change, if we change. Remember the mafia victim Blessed Rosario Livatino’s statement: 'When I die no one will ask how much I believed, but rather how credible I was.'"
